The determination of total bacterial count is a standard used to determine the degree of bacterial contamination and hygiene quality of food. It reflects whether the food meets hygiene requirements during the production process, in order to make appropriate hygiene evaluations of the tested samples. The total bacterial count to some extent indicates the quality of food hygiene.
Currently, a considerable number of laboratories still use traditional manual visual counting methods, relying on magnifying glass observation, clicking on each colony with a marker pen, and then counting the total number to obtain the numerical value of colony count. This not only causes visual fatigue to the human eye, but also undoubtedly is a heavy task for counting a large number of plates.

The plate colony counting method is a common live bacterial counting method. By gradient diluting the bacterial solution to be tested, a certain volume of diluted bacterial solution is uniformly mixed before the solid culture medium solidifies, or the bacterial solution is coated on a solidified solid culture medium plate. After constant temperature cultivation, the number of colonies appearing on the plate can be counted. Combined with the dilution degree of the bacterial solution, the total number of colonies in the sample can be calculated.
In microbiological testing, calculating the total number of bacterial colonies is a common experimental analysis item. During the testing process, every step needs to be carefully considered to ensure the accuracy of the test results. The commonly used testing method in laboratories is the plate counting method adopted by the national standard method. However, its operation time is relatively long, the process is complex, often requiring a lot of time, and efficiency cannot be guaranteed. Although there are simpler and time-saving methods, these methods are relatively expensive and the types of experiments are relatively limited. Therefore, the application of new colony counting techniques in detection methods needs to be more actively focused on, in order to make detection more economical, convenient, and reliable.
The ICON automatic colony counter can quickly capture, identify, and calculate colony culture dishes, with a detection speed of up to 4 seconds per dish, saving more time for testing personnel. Moreover, it has changed the traditional detection mode of "naked eye+brain", and the ultra-high detection efficiency can reduce labor costs by 50%.
